Grief is a natural response to the death of a family member or a close friend, serious illness, and other significant losses. Overcoming loss happens in stages that look different from person to person. Most people get used to and grow from their situation in time, and grief counselling is proven to help with that process. Reach out to our professional therapists to obtain grief and loss
counselling online, Australia-wide.
The causes of grief and loss
There are many reasons why we may experience a deep sense of sorrow, and we must all cope with it at some point in life. Causes include:
- The death of a loved one
- Divorce
- Changes in friendship
- A major illness
You may experience intense emotional pain because you have lost a loved one, a meaningful relationship, a pregnancy, a pet, a job, or your income. The more significant the loss, the more intense the sadness you will experience. More reasons are children leaving home as they mature, infertility, and separation from family and friends.
The stages of grief and loss
Each person has their way of dealing with bereavement. However, most of us go through the following stages, either sequentially or randomly.
- Shock and denial: To start with, you may experience shock. Because it is too difficult to face the truth, people commonly enter into a state of denial before accepting what has happened.
- Anger: You may feel intense anger once you start believing and processing what has occurred.
- You may think: “This isn’t fair.” and “How can this be happening to me? I've done nothing wrong.”
- Bargaining: Struggling to find meaning is common after a significant loss. We usually try to build a sense of false hope to make ourselves believe we can avoid the pain. We may try to strike a deal with ourselves, someone else, or God during this stage.
- Depression: This is the most widely accepted form of grief. At this stage, you may retreat from others as the reality of the situation dawns on you. You could feel overwhelmed by everything and experience feelings of hopelessness.
- Acceptance: This happens when our emotions begin to stabilise. We come to terms with what has happened and decide how we will move forward from the situation. It is a time of adjustment and reconnecting with the world.
Grief counselling can help you through all the stages towards acceptance and growth. Most people need to talk to someone during a life change, but friends and family members do not necessarily know how to console someone going through a gruelling period. Why not consider psychological services provided by qualified professionals instead?

Diagnosis
Whereas grief is a natural reaction after a substantial loss, differentiating between regular and complicated kinds is tricky. Our clinical psychologists can distinguish between the two, which is essential, and start you on the path towards recovery and healing.
