There are differences in every relationship usually caused by the contrast in thoughts, ideas,  beliefs, and values however chronic relationship conflict can be worrisome. It can lead to degrading physical and mental wellbeing, affect other important relationships, affect the quality of work, sleep schedules and so much more. 

A person exposed to chronic relationship problems in life or at home may suffer from the following:

Types of Relationship Difficulties

  • Infidelity has become an increasing problem in romantic relationships causing grave consequences for the people involved. Having been cheated on can cause anxiety and stress, leading to one’s mental health deteriorating, further leading to mental illnesses like mood disorders and depression. 
  • Intimacy is interpreted in many ways in today’s world. Intimacy is seen as giving oneself to another by having meaningful conversations and letting your wall down to your significant other. Intimacy in the modern-day also stands for the physical intimacy between two people. The quality of a relationship is usually measured by the level of intimacy and if unfulfilled can cause serious relationship problems. 
  • Conflict plays a role in any kind of relationship, romantic or otherwise but they are inevitable. Serious conflicts can cause psychological pain, anxiety, depression, or aggression. 
  • Communication or rather effective communication plays a vital role in all kinds of relationships. Healthy couples speak openly to each other which allows them to reassure their partners and connect with them on a deeper level and the absence of this can cause misunderstandings and conflict. 

 

Symptoms of Relationship Problems

  • Selfishness with your own feelings while disregarding the feelings of one’s significant other. 
  • Inflexibility in compromising when it comes to important decisions, social activities, opportunities, and having children. 
  • Withholding communication, sex, or affection is a sign of anger. 
  • Name-calling 
  • Using Manipulative comments and verbal abuse. 
  • Passive-aggressive behavior 

 

Causes of Relationship Problems

  • Mental health issues can cause miscommunication in a relationship and should be addressed. 
  • Indifference is a problem usually found in long-term relationships where both people are in the relationship more out of habit than feelings. One or even both the partners might not care enough to put effort into the relationship.  
  • Lack of common goals. It is important for couples to be on the same page when it comes to life goals especially with things like career, children, family, physical health choices, and even spiritual. 
  • Verbal and physical abuse is one of the gravest problems and both partners should work to resolve them.

 

Diagnoses

Treatment

  • Behavioral couple therapy (BCT) - Helps improve communication between partners. This therapy involves analyzing faulty thinking and behavior patterns to understand the scope for improvement and work on it. This required up to 12-20 weekly sessions with the psychologist over a period of several months. 
  • Emotion-focused couple therapy (EFT) - This therapy helps improve bonding and attachment in adult relationships. There are three stages of EFT: 
  • De-escalation - In this stage, all negative interactions and negative emotions related to attachment issues are studied to understand each partner's insecurities and fears. 
  • Restructuring - Each partner learns to effectively communicate their emotions and show compassion for each other. 
  • Consolidation - This is the step where the psychologist helps both partners build new and effective communications strategies. 

 

These are both treatments that have proved to be extremely successful in overcoming relationship issues.
